Obituary: : John F. Barbara, 75 of Findlay passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023. He was born in Warren, Ohio on November 20, 1947 to Kenneth and Sophia Dorthea (Barley) Barbara. John graduated from Leavittsburg, Ohio High School and attended Kent State University. He served his country in the U.S. Army. On November 27, 1971 he married Saundra Matey and she survives along with his two sons; Jon Barbara and Christopher (Jami) Barbara both of Findlay. John was also the proud Papa to Olivia, Sophia, Christopher "CJ", Connor and Lyla Barbara. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Barbara (Pat) Quinlan, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ken Barbara. Mr. Barbara worked for 35 years for General Motors where he served as the local UAW President. He later served as the administrative assistant to the International UAW President in Detroit, Michigan. He was a board member of the American Red Cross in Michigan, an Honorary Kentucky Colonel and was a member of the UAW Veteran Organization. He loved attending sporting events for his sons and grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 750 Bright Road, Findlay, Ohio 45840. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of John to Bridge Home Health and Hospice, 15100 Birchaven Lane, Findlay, Ohio 45840.

     Research: Valerie Harrison: I was told from my cousin Analee that the Vellas came from Malta as she had heard it from Bessie’s husband Julius Phillips. There are two Joseph Vellas from Malta listed on the UK census but they would be too young. My mother, Matilda Myers, told me that Bertha and Joseph had an arranged marriage and that he was quite a bit older than she. I have been trying to learn her maiden name with no luck. Bertha was born in Latvia and migrated to England where they met and married.¹ He contributed their family genealogy to Maltese Immigration Project.
